Extremely Rare European Neolithic ‘Pecked and Ground’ Massive Axe-Hammer
Granodiorite, 4.63 kg, 20.19 cm. Circa 3,000 BC. A massive battle axe-hammer in a grey-patinated reddish-pink granodiorite, with a curved rectangular hammer face, a teardrop-shaped top profile, with the central cylindrical hafting hole skilfully drilled and tapered, nicely finished retaining some pecking, showing signs of use on blade, unusually large and heavy, uncommon thus. Reference: McAlpine, Lord A. Antiquities from Europe and the Near East 1987, p.74. Extremely fine condition. Provenance: property of a Gentleman; acquired in the 1970s.
