Extremely Rare Tudor ‘Elizabeth I’ Trade Weight
Lead, 210 grams, 51.59 mm dia. 16th century AD. A discoid weight of about 11mm thickness. The upper face is stamped with the design 'EL' beneath a crown, and an inverted script 'R'. The 'EL' stamp with its crown above is the mark of Queen Elizabeth (1558-1603) and is very rare on lead weights. The reverse bears a retrograde 'VII' incised by hand: this might be a denomination mark, but is more probably an informal mark of ownership. Reference: Biggs, N. & Withers, P.
