Georgian 'Bulb-Headed' Hair Pin / Bodkin
Silver, 5.32 grams, 88.07 mm. 18th century AD. A rectangular-section shaft with a bulbous knop at the top. The shaft is pierced at the tope with a circular hole and below this is placed a rectangular slot. The initials RN are inscribed below the slot in voided capitals. Bodkins were used in the Tudor and Stuart periods as female dress accessories; the upper hole was used to attach a pearl pendant to the shaft. Reference: Bailey, G. Detector Finds Vol.3, Witham, 1997 p.77 item 15. Very fine condition, some distortion to lower end. Provenance: from an old English collection.
