Unique Uninscribed 'Obverse Star' North East Coast Gold Stater 008948

Unique Uninscribed 'Obverse Star' North East Coast Stater
Gold, 6.17 grams; 19.27 mm. Circa 50 - 40 B.C. Obverse: Abstract head of Apollo right. Reverse: Disjointed horse left. Coin Index Registration Number at Oxford University: CCI 08.8243. M 50, 50a, 51, 51a; VA 804 - 3; BMC 182 - 191. S 28. Unknown dies with a bold star. Extremely fine, a large circular flan of golden gold, a sharpe centrally struck horse, well ornamented. Found Lincolnshire.

John Sills of the Celtic Coin Index at Oxford University writes: "A crude style rosette stater, but the obverse has a bold star next to the wreath that I’ve not seen before on any other example. This is a little later than the pellet types, but the horse is copied from the sub-group of Gallo-Belgic E class 3, the Gallic war uniface type, still indicating an early date of c. 50-40 B.C."
