Copper-alloy, 13.01 grams, 68.20 mm. Circa 4th century BC. A cast D-section belt mount in the form of a large canine head above a ribbed section from which emerges a second, addorsed head, from the front of which develops the hooked finial. The attachment rivet pierces the muzzle of the upper head, which is concave on the reverse. Reference: cf. Bonhams sale, 29th April 2009 lot 158 for a group of similar mounts. Very fine condition. Provenance: from an old English collection.

Schist, 210 grams; 151.39 mm. Circa 1st - 2nd Century B.C. The standing figure of Prince Siddhartha, the first Buddha, He is shown standing wearing drapery and an elaborate head piece, a superb representation of Prince Siddhartha, the Buddha, prior to his enlightenment. Typical of Gandharan sculptures of the period are the arched eyebrows; almond shaped half-closed eyes, and an undulating moustache. Siddhartha was born 563 B.C. as a prince, he abandoned his inheritance in order to dedicate his life to learning how to overcome suffering, later discovering what Buddhists calls the Middle Way-a path of moderation. Lower right arm and feet missing, upper disc with small repaire. Beautiful, striking and Rare.

A wine cup with black glaze and deep bowl with flat rim and a single vertical looped handle on a rounded base. The whole surface is black gloss over red clay. Reference: Xenon ware is a specific type of Apulian pottery, so named after a vase in Frankfurt (Beazley, EVP, p. 219,1.). Excellent undamaged condition. Provenance: from an old English collection.

Silver, 0.65 grams, 14.13 mm. Circa 4th century BC. A cast silver human mask, circa 1mm thick, dished on the underside. The mask features radiating strands of hair, a combined brow-nose-moustache feature, roundel ears, square eyes with point pupils looking to the right, a scaphoid mouth and a radiating stranded beard. The stern expression recalls the Greek motif of the
gorgoneion
, a protective, terrifying face which was believed to intimidate malefactors and to deter attack; it is derived from the Medusa legend. The item has no obvious attachment points, and may have been impressed onto a prepared adhesive surface. Reference: Ukrainian Scythian material is catalogued in Bonora, G-L. and Marzatico, F.

Clay, 28.61 grams; 62.85 mm. Circa 4th century BC. Light orange clay with metallic black gloss over the whole surface with red wash decoration. Bi-conical body with rounded middle section mounted upon flared foot base; short bowl shaped mouth flanked by twin high arched strap handles. The decoration is different on both sides, one is detailed with a single line above five arches containing single dots with double base line, and the other has the same lines above and below but with ten irregular curl motifs between. Ref: Hayes 1984, 203-4. A beautiful piece in very fine condition. Ex Ancient Art.
