Greek Apulian 'Xenon Ware' Southern Italian Skyphos
Clay, 100 grams, 128.03 x 78.38 mm. Apulia, Magna Graecia, South Eastern Italy, circa 400-350 BC. A Skyphos (wine cup) with black glaze and deep bowl with curved rim and two horizontal looped handles upon a short rounded base. The whole surface is black gloss over red clay. Reference: Xenon ware is a specific type of Apulian pottery, so named after a vase in Frankfurt (Beazley, EVP, p. 219,1.). Uncleaned 'as excavated', small chip to base, otherwise undamaged excellent condition. Provenance: from an old English collection.
