Greek Gnathian 'Egg-and-Tongue' Black-Glazed Olpe
Ceramic, 275 grams, 210 mm. Circa 4th century BC. An Gnathian olpe or wine-jug with a high handle in black glaze with red, white and yellow ochre designs comprising yellow egg-and-tongue below a red band with roundels, wavy-line and ovolo ornament above and vertical white bars on the neck; the handle of D-section and gracefully curved; the spout C-section with flanking lugs; the belly pear-shaped and the foot stepped. Extremely fine condition, complete. Provenance: from an old English collection, found Apulia, Magna Graecia, South-eastern Italy.
