Greek Gnathian 'Ropework' Black-Glazed Kantharos
Ceramic, 155 grams, 94 mm. Circa 4th century BC. A Gnathian black-glazed kantharos with high, ribbed handles, rounded belly and stemmed foot, decorated in ochre slip - one face with ovolo on the rim, alternating white and red bars and ropework on the shoulder and egg-and-tongue on the belly, and on the other with geometric bands above paired roundels. Tiny chip to base, otherwise extremely fine condition. Provenance: from an old English collection, found in Apulia, Magna Graecia, South-eastern Italy.
