Henry III 'Winchester/Jordan' Voided Long Cross Cut Halfpenny
Silver, 0.68 grams; 17.18 mm. Class 3c; 1248-1250 AD. Obverse: crowned facing bust without sceptre and legend [H]ENRICVS R[EX III] with NR ligated. Reverse: long voided cross with three pellets in each angle dividing legend IVR DAN [ ] [ ] with AN ligated for moneyer Jordan at Winchester mint. S. 1364; N. 988. Good very fine.
The practice of cutting coins stopped abruptly in 1272 A.D. Up to this time, coins were commonly cut into Halfpennies and quarters [farthings] when there was no/not enough small change in circulation. This practice stopped at the beginning of the reign of Edward I as he considered cutting through the king's head an act of treason punishable by death.
