Rare Jacobite 'Dread God' Stamp Seal
Copper-alloy and carnelian, 5.54 grams, 25.49 mm. Circa 18th-19th century AD. An elliptical onyx intaglio within a stepped copper-alloy frame with lobes for an openwork handle (lost in antiquity). The design of the intaglio features a bearded male with naked torso, left hand on hip and right arm extended; above this the motto DREAD GOD in seriffed capitals and below a wreath. Below this a hatched cartouche bearing the initials RG in an ornate copperplate hand. The phrase 'Dread God' is the motto of the Scottish Monro clan. Reference: cf. Pateman, B.
