Late Anglo-Saxon/Viking 'Addorsed Beasts' Stirrup Mount
Copper-alloy, 19.40 grams; 44.67 mm. Circa 10th – 11th century AD. Williams's Class A Type 1 Anglo-Scandinavian mounts are characterized by a pentagonal profile and incised decoration. The ornamentation consists of two addorsed pendant animal heads with long, drooping necks and enmeshed tendrils in Anglo-Scandinavian style. The lower fied between the two rivet holes features a looped 'fleur-de-lys' design formed from these tendrils. Reference: Williams, D.
