Late Anglo-Saxon/Viking 'Openwork' Lozengiform Stirrup Mount
Copper-alloy, 12.37 grams; 44.80 mm. Circa 10th - 11th century AD. Anglo-Scandinavian stirrup-mounts of Williams's Class A Type 12 are found in both closed and openwork versions, as here. The mount is formed as a lozenge with an internal saltire, the junctions marked with raised bosses. The quality of the mounts' workmanship is determined by the fineness of execution; on this example, the straps are all narrow and finely made. The rear flange is complete and pierced, and the apex loop is intact. Reference: Williams, D.
