Late Anglo-Saxon/Viking 'Roaring Beast' Stirrup Mount
Copper-alloy, 19.36 grams, 45.99 mm. Circa 10th – 11th century AD. An Anglo-Scandinavian stirrup mount of Class A, Type 11A depicting a lion passant with raised forepaw, tail and head, and with its mouth open as if roaring. The design is reserved against the background, heavily modelled to give a rounded effect. The single upper rivet is in place in the rivet-hole and the floriate detailing on the upper loop is present. The lower portion of the design is pierced between the animal's legs for a second attachment rivet. Reference: Williams, D.
