Late Anglo-Saxon/Viking 'Roaring Beast' Stirrup Mount
Copper-alloy, 17.14 grams, 47.02 mm. Circa 10th – 11th century AD. An Anglo-Scandinavian stirrup mount of Class A, Type 11A depicting a lion passant with raised forepaw, tail and head, and with its mouth open as if roaring. The design is reserved against the background, heavily modelled to give a rounded effect. The lower two rivet-holes, the attachment loop and the floriate detailing on the upper loop are all present. The lower portion of the design is pierced beneath the animal's stomach. Reference: Williams, D.
