Late Anglo-Saxon/Viking ‘Lozengiform’ Class A Stirrup Mount
Copper-alloy 39.55 grams; 55.76 mm. Circa 11th century AD. A numerous form of Anglo-Scandinavian stirrup-mount, Class A Type IIA is formed with a figural scene on the outer face: a lion inpassant pose with its right foreleg lifted, and its head tilted back and mouth open as if roaring. The present example shows clearly the shoulders, rear haunch and head. Reference: Williams, D.
