Late Anglo-Saxon/Viking ‘World Tree’ Stirrup Mount 015257

Late Anglo-Saxon/Viking ‘World Tree’ Stirrup Mount 015257
Late Anglo-Saxon/Viking 'World Tree' Stirrup Mount
Copper-alloy, 24.04 grams, 46.21 mm. 10th-11th century AD. A good example of Williams's Class A Type 6 stirrup-mount. The design on this class consists of an animal-head upper terminal from which emerge two lateral entwined serpents above a vegetal motif which possibly represents a blend of the Norse Mjotviðr world-tree motif and the classical Christian 'tree of life' drawn from Anglo-Saxon manuscript art. The design is clearly moulded and well preserved. The lower flange is still present on the reverse and the two basal rivet-holes are intact. Reference: Williams, D. Late Saxon Stirrup-Strap Mounts – A Classification and Catalogue, CBA Research Report 111, Oxford, 1997, p.42ff. Very fine condition.
