Lucius Verus (7th March AD 161 - February AD 169)

Lucius Ceionius Commodus was born on 15th December AD 130. On New Year's Day AD 138 the young Lucius was adopted as joint heir with Marcus Aurelius by Antoninus Pius. They became Rome's first co-emperors in AD 161; but Lucius died from a stroke returning from the Danubian frontier in AD 168 at the age of 38.

Bronze, 11.77 grams, 26.61 mm. Rome. AD 163-164. Obverse: L AVREL VERVS AVG ARMENIACVS; radiate head right. Reverse: VICT AVG TR P IIII IMP II COS II; S C across fields; Victory standing right; holding trophy in both hands; Armenian captive seated at foot. RIC III, 1411; Cohen 333. Fine.
