Lucius Verus (7th March AD 161 - February AD 169)

Lucius Ceionius Commodus was born on 15th December AD 130. On New Year's Day AD 138 the young Lucius was adopted as joint heir with Marcus Aurelius by Antoninus Pius. They became Rome's first co-emperors in AD 161; but Lucius died from a stroke returning from the Danubian frontier in AD 168 at the age of 38.

Silver, 3.15 grams, 17.06 mm. Rome. 164 AD. Obverse: L VERVS AVG ARMENIACVS, laureate head right. Reverse: TR P IIII IMP II COS II, Mars standing right in military dress, holding spear and resting hand on shield. RIC 516; RSC 230; Sear (1988) 1540; Sear 5355 var (bust type). Extremely fine.
