Luristan Bronze Age ‘Penannular Guard’ Sword
Copper-alloy, 775 grams, width 60.55 mm at top of blade, length 60 cm overall. End of 2nd millennium BC. The sword is cast in one piece with a long, triangular blade and slight median rib. The upper blade is furnished with a cast penannular guard, the grip is solid and circular in section. The pommel is a transverse disc emerging from the top of the grip, with two slots and a conical depression showing signs of a grey mineralized deposit, probably the remains of a decorative bone fitting. The grip shows a chalky circular deposit on both sides by the mould-parting line about 5cm below the pommel, and another at 9.5cm just above the junction with the blade. The surface has been professionally conserved. Reference: Khorasani, M.M. Arms and Armour from Iran. The Bronze Age to the End of the Qajar Period, Tubingen, 2006, catalogue nos. 33 & 34.
