Marcus Aurelius (7th March AD 161 - 17th March AD 180)

Born in Rome in AD 121, and the nephew of Faustina Senior. One of his first acts as Emperor was to associate the younger Lucius Verus with him as co-ruler. He died aged 59 in March AD 180, to be succeeded by co-emperor Commodus.

Bronze, 9.72 grams, 25.38 mm. Rome. 115-116 AD (struck under Antoninus Pius). Obverse: AVRELIVS CAES ANTON AVG PII F, bare head right. Reverse: TR P X COS II S-C, Pietas standing left, dropping grain of incense over altar and holding box of incense. RIC III, 1333; Sear -. Good fine/good.
