Rare Medieval 'Thomas Becket' Harness Pendant
Copper alloy, 10.06 grams; 43.48 mm. Circa 15th century A.D. A nice horse harness pendant with the bust of Thomas Becket facing left within a central circle, eight leaf shaped arms radiate round and connect to the suspension loop. St. Thomas Becket, circa 1118 - December 29, 1170 A.D. was Archbishop of Canterbury from 1162 to 1170. He is venerated as a saint and martyr by both the Roman Catholic Church and the Anglican Church. He engaged in conflict with King Henry II over the rights and privileges of the Church and was assassinated by followers of the king in Canterbury Cathedral. A rare pendant in very fine condition.
