Scarce Medieval 'Bell-Shaped' Knife Quillon
Silver, 4.27 grams, 31.05 mm. 14th-15th century AD. A cast lower guard from a small knife. The central plaque is scrolled to the outer edges, with a central square hole. The shorter edges develop into bell-shaped lugs, each with a small knop to the flat outer face. There are traces of gilding to one of the flat faces. Reference: cf. quillons from Lewes, Sussex, recorded with the PAS under reference SUSS-9EFBE4. Very fine condition. Provenance: property of an Essex collector.
