Medieval Casket 'Folded' Barrel Key
Copper-alloy, 3.00 grams, 37.78 mm. Circa 12th century AD. An unusual barrel key of Type IB made by folding sheet copper-alloy over a former. The bit is a simple rectangle with a circular piercing; it is folded i.e. made with a double thickness for strength. Reference: London Museum Medieval Catalogue 1930, reprinted Ipswich, 1993 p.134 and plate xxix (1). Very fine condition. Provenance: found Suffolk, England 2006.
