Medieval 'Grotesque Face' Strap End
Gilt copper-alloy, 13.06 grams, 33.01 mm. Circa 14th century AD. A D-shaped strap end formed as a hollow casting, with two attachment rivets in place. The upper edge is provided with star-shaped crenellations. The main decoration is a grotesque animal mask with heart-shaped ears, furrowed brow, heavy brow-ridge, annular eyes, fleur-de-lys muzzle and crescent mouth.
