Superb Medieval 'Hail Mary full of Grace' Heraldic Shield Pendant
Gilt copper-alloy, 5.32 grams, 23.52 mm. Circa 13th-15th century AD. A cast copper-alloy disc mount, pierced for suspension. The central motif is a heater shield within a pelletted border surrounded by a Lombardic script legend 'AVEMARIAGRACIE' (Hail Mary full of Grace). The shield is decorated with a red enamelled cross, the arms (or a cross gules) associated with the Anglo-Irish Burgh family. Reference: cf. similar design of cup weight in Read, B. Metal Artefacts of Antiquity, vol.1, Langport, 2001 item 863. Extremely fine condition, gilding intact. Provenance: from an important London collection, acquired 1991 inventory no.91.225 / cat.602.
