Medieval 'Heraldic Lions' Fitting
Copper-alloy, 7.35 grams, 42.24 mm. 12th-15th century AD. A flat rectangular sheet pierced at the lower corners for attachment and with two straps emerging from the upper edge (to form a hinge?). The design comprises a cartouche within which are two opposed advancing lions with erect tails and a single disc face. Reference: cf. geometric mount in Murawski, P. Benet's Artefacts of England and the United Kingdom, Ely, 2003 item M09-0125. Very fine condition. Provenance: found Wirral, Cheshire, England.
