| | Medieval 'Horse Heads' Pendant 022121 | Medieval 'Horse Heads' Pendant Silver, 6.06 grams, 48.91 mm. Circa 13th century AD. A cast silver pendant formed as a pair of animal heads emerging from a central lozengiform plate with a bulbous finial and knop beneath. The suspension loop at the top is thick, with the suspension ring still in place. Reference: cf. zoomorphic plate pendants from grave 14 in the 13th century cemetery at Podini-Rusini, Latvia, in Griciuviene, E. Ziemgaliai - The Semigallians, Vilnius, 2005 p.66-8. | | Medieval 'Humphrey de Bohun, Earl of Hereford' Heraldic Harness Pendant 023101 | Extremely Rare Medieval 'Humphrey de Bohun, Earl of Hereford' Heraldic Harness Pendant Copper-alloy,12.02 grams, 41.26 mm. Circa 14th century AD. A cast copper-alloy pendant in the form of a heater shield with pierced suspension plate above. The shield is formed with recessed designs for champ leve enamel. The arms comprise a bend coticed between six lions rampant. Arms of this description were carried by Humphrey de Bohun, Earl of Hereford who was born on 25th March 1342 and died on16th January 1373, at Pleshey, Essex. Humphrey's father, William de Bohun 1st Earl of Northampton, died in 1360 and his uncle, Earl Humphrey, in 1361 leaving him the Earldoms of Hereford and Essex, and the office of Constable of England. He was made a Knight of the Garter in 1365. Humphrey died aged 31 on 16th January 1373; his early death is regarded as suspicious, as he had been implicated in the poisoning of Thomas Beauchamp, 3rd Earl of Warwick. | | Medieval 'Pugh or Stuart Family' Heraldic Horse Harness Stud 018362 | Medieval 'Pugh or Stuart Family' Heraldic Horse Harness Stud Copper-alloy, 3.80 grams, 17.72 mm. Circa 13th-15th century AD. A cast copper-alloy stud in the form of a heater shield with attachment rivet to the rear. The face of the shield is differenced with gilt billets above and below, and emblazoned with a gilt lion passant on the enamel background. The lion passant is a prominent feature of many heraldic shields including those of the families of Pugh and Stuart. Reference: Foster, J. The Dictionary of Heraldry. | | Medieval 'Peverell Family' Heraldic Horse Harness Pendant 009908 | Medieval 'Peverell Family' Heraldic Horse Harness Pendant Copper-alloy, 12.86 grams, 39.55 mm. Circa 13th-15th century AD. A cast copper-alloy pendant in the form of a lozenge with suspension loop above. The surface is red enamel with an enamelled bend between six crosses patty. The arms are probably based on those of the Peverell family (gules crusilly patty or) with a bend for difference. The lozenge was used by females in place of the shield used by males. | | Medieval 'Counts of Bar' Heraldic Horse Harness Pendant 006623 | Medieval 'Counts of Bar' Heraldic Horse Harness Pendant Copper-alloy, 4.60 grams, 34.03 mm. Circa 13th-15th century AD. A cast copper-alloy pendant in the form of a heater shield with a transverse lug above, attached to a bifid domed mount with rivet to the rear. The face of the shield features a pair of addorsed fish on a background of crosses. These arms belong to the Counts of Bar, a region west of Lorraine, France, and are described heraldically as 'azure, semée of crosses, two barbel endorsed or'. These arms were borne by a knight, Jean de Bar, in the forces of Edward I at the Siege of Caerlaverock in 1300, a castle on the Scottish border; Edward's forces included a contingent from Lorraine among his English and Breton troops. During the siege, the English heralds composed a roll of arms in the form of many verses each describing the deeds of each nobleman and knight present, with a blazon of his arms. A cast copper-alloy pendant in the form of a heater shield with a transverse lug above, pierced for suspension. The face of the shield features a reserved cross with the four voids filled with red enamel. A red shield with a gold cross is found in the arms of many ancient towns and cities in Europe, from Uppsala in Sweden and Lübeck in northern Germany to Izaux in the Hautes-Pyrénées region of southern France. The face of the shield is emblazoned with a repeating lozenge pattern, described heraldically as fretty, providing a diaper effect with red enamel infill. | | Medieval 'Two-Part' Harness Pendant 022484 | Medieval 'Two-Part' Harness Pendant Gilt copper-alloy, 25.77 grams, 50.30 mm. Circa 14th-15th century AD. A complex cast copper-alloy harness pendant formed in two sections. The outer frame is formed as an openwork hexafoil with palmette detailing. Hinged to the rear of the frame is a copper-alloy plate, with a large spherical knop rivetted through the centre. A cast rectangular mount featuring a griffin in champlevé technique advancing with right foreleg raised, tail erect and wings spread. Above and below are rectangular plates pierced for attachment. A lozengiform mount with an inset central panel bearing a floral design. Four elliptical arms radiate from a central blue-green enamel roundel; the horizontal ones meet the outer border at the widest points, the vertical ones meet the border where it respects the circular attachment holes. A thin square cast pendant with a thick, integral suspension loop attached by a transverse pin to a D-section T-shaped bar. | | Medieval Armorial 'Openwork' Horse Harness Pendant 016750 | Medieval Armorial 'Openwork' Horse Harness Pendant Copper-alloy and gilt, 9.85 grams, 49.67 mm. Circa 14th century AD. A pendant and suspender comprising a T-shaped bracket with a teardrop-shaped pendant. The upper end of the pendant is pierced to accept the retaining pin of the bracket; from this the pendant is divided into two addorsed c-scrolls below which it forms an openwork rounded triangle with hatched and linear vegetation ornament. The remains of gilding are present across much of the surface. The fixing lugs have been removed at the back for easy mounting and display. Reference: cf. Read, B. | | Medieval Armorial 'Pierced Disc' Horse Harness Pendant 016749 | Medieval Armorial 'Pierced Disc' Horse Harness Pendant Copper-alloy and silver, 7.86 grams, 50.61mm. 12th-15th century AD. A thin bracteate pendant with a sturdy suspension loop. Around the central circular piercing is a six-pointed star with dense punched roundel decoration across the obverse. In the central piercing is a globular-headed rivet. The loop is attached to the suspension plate which has the stump of the attachment rivet on the reverse. | | Medieval 'Type V' Harness Pendant 015220 | Medieval 'Type V' Harness Pendant Copper-alloy, 10.86 grams, 38.80 mm. 11th-14th century AD. A medieval heraldic pendant of Type V resembling a four-leafed clover. The design consists of a quadruped (probably a griffin) passant, its splayed claws and raised tail inlaid in reddish copper against the greenish copper-alloy field.
