Medieval ‘Hexagonal’ Pendant Weight
Lead, 105 grams, 45.40 mm. 15th-16th century AD. A hexagonal weight of about 8mm thickness. The upper surface bears a bilinear 'starburst' design within a shallow border. A small iron wire hoop (about 7.7mm long) is held within the lead casting, forming a suspension loop. Lead plates cast into a variety of shapes were used in the medieval period, sometimes to check currency or as personalised sets for easy recognition. Reference: Biggs, N. & Withers, P.
