Extremely Rare Medieval 'Humphrey de Bohun, Earl of Hereford' Heraldic Harness Pendant
Copper-alloy,12.02 grams, 41.26 mm. Circa 14th century AD. A cast copper-alloy pendant in the form of a heater shield with pierced suspension plate above. The shield is formed with recessed designs for champ leve enamel. The arms comprise a bend coticed between six lions rampant. Arms of this description were carried by Humphrey de Bohun, Earl of Hereford who was born on 25th March 1342 and died on16th January 1373, at Pleshey, Essex. Humphrey's father, William de Bohun 1st Earl of Northampton, died in 1360 and his uncle, Earl Humphrey, in 1361 leaving him the Earldoms of Hereford and Essex, and the office of Constable of England. He was made a Knight of the Garter in 1365. Humphrey died aged 31 on 16th January 1373; his early death is regarded as suspicious, as he had been implicated in the poisoning of Thomas Beauchamp, 3rd Earl of Warwick.
