Medieval 'Inscribed' Barrel Lock
Bronze, 38 grams, 33 mm. 13th-14th century AD. A cast tumbler lock with two lateral loops (both fragmentary) and small loop finial; to one face, a punched line, to the other the inscribed text 'VISIVM VIVAS' ('... that thou mayst live') in regular Roman capitals; the central spigot still in place. Fine condition, parts lost in antiquity. Provenance: ex the late Alan Harrison collection, Lincolnshire, UK.
