Medieval 'La Mailleraye-sur-Seine' Heraldic Horse Harness Stud
Copper-alloy, 6.21 grams, 18.56 mm. Circa 13th-15th century AD. A cast copper-alloy stud in the form of a heater shield with attachment rivet to the rear. The face of the shield is emblazoned with a repeating lozenge pattern, described heraldically as fretty, providing a diaper effect with red enamel infill. A red shield with gold fretty surface is found in the arms of the French town of La Mailleraye-sur-Seine, in Seine Maritime, northern France. Reference: Foster, J. The Dictionary of Heraldry.
