| | Tudor ‘Elizabeth I’ Disc Weight 017329 | Extremely Rare Tudor ‘Elizabeth I’ Disc Weight Lead, 210 grams, 51.59 mm dia. 16th century AD. A discoid weight of about 11mm thickness. The upper face is stamped with the design 'EL' beneath a crown, and an inverted script 'R'. The 'EL' stamp with its crown above is the mark of Queen Elizabeth (1558-1603) and is very rare on lead weights. The reverse bears a retrograde 'VII' incised by hand: this might be a denomination mark, but is more probably an informal mark of ownership. Reference: Biggs, N. & Withers, P. | | Medieval 'Triangular' Standing Weight 017333 | Medieval ‘Triangular’ Standing Weight Lead, 110 grams, 36.75 mm. 15th-16th century AD. A triangular prismatic weight of about 13mm thickness. Standing weights are designed to stand upright, although they can still be used laid flat; 'lying' weights' are mentioned in 15th century sources. The present piece has rounded edges to the upper surface, with remains of an incised border. The lower face is almost flat. Reference: Biggs, N. & Withers, P. | | Medieval 'Hexagonal' Pendant Weight 017332 | Medieval ‘Hexagonal’ Pendant Weight Lead, 105 grams, 45.40 mm. 15th-16th century AD. A hexagonal weight of about 8mm thickness. The upper surface bears a bilinear 'starburst' design within a shallow border. A small iron wire hoop (about 7.7mm long) is held within the lead casting, forming a suspension loop. Lead plates cast into a variety of shapes were used in the medieval period, sometimes to check currency or as personalised sets for easy recognition. Reference: Biggs, N. & Withers, P. | | Medieval 'Saltire' Square Weight 017335 | Medieval ‘Saltire’ Square Weight Lead, 75 grams, 32.08 mm. 15th-16th century AD. A square weight of about 9mm thickness. The upper surface bears a saltire within a raised border, with rectilinear motifs in the quarters. Along the bevelled edges are panels continuing the lines of the surface design. | | Medieval 'Spoked' Disc Weight 017331 | Medieval ‘Spoked’ Disc Weight Lead, 100 grams, 41.23 mm dia. 16th century AD. A discoid weight of about 9mm thickness. A cast disc with a central design of a spoked wheel or cross with further motifs placed in the quarters; two may be masks and one a pellet, while the fourth may be a cross or sword. | | Tudor 'Incuse' Disc Weight 017334 | Tudor ‘Incuse’ Disc Weight Lead, 70 grams, 32.30 mm dia. 16th century AD. A discoid weight of about 8mm thickness. The upper surface is marked with a stamp showing 'II', the Roman numeral for 'two'. These Tudor-period weights were in use in the 16th century, but are close in form to some Romano-British examples (e.g. the finds from Chester excavated in the 19th century). | | Medieval 'Steelyard' Weight 015048 | Medieval 'Steelyard' Weight Lead, 395 grams, 49.49 mm. Circa 14th century AD. A cast weight of hexagonal shape and tiered and weighing just under 14 ounces. The body of the weight has an excised cross on two opposing sides and to the underside. A small copper-alloy suspension loop set into the top centre; for use on a steelyard.
