Superb Medieval 'Lion Couchant' Figurine
Gilt copper-alloy, 33.06 grams, 42.61 mm. Circa 15th-16th century AD. A cast copper-alloy lion figurine, hollow to the underside and heavily gilded. The lion is shown crouching with its tail curled round to its right side. The animal's back is formed as a flat plate; the whole figurine may have been a decorative support for another item. Reference: cf. late medieval animal figurine found at Leckhamstead, Berkshire, reported to the PAS under reference BERK-8E1946. Extremely fine condition, complete. Provenance: from an important London collection, acquired 1989 inventory no.1989.79 / cat.no.594.
