Medieval 'Lion Regardant' Buckle
Copper-alloy, 27.79 mm, 35.21 mm. 12th-13th century AD. A cast buckle formed as a lion modelled in the round. The lion's head is turned backwards to grip the tail in its mouth. The tongue is looped around a bar between the forepaws and hindpaws. The mane is emphasised with notched bands. Reference: cf. Egan, G. and Pritchard, F. Dress Accessories 1150-1450, London, 2002 item 500. Very fine condition. Provenance: found Lincolnshire, UK.
