Medieval 'Lion Statant' Heraldic Mount
Copper-alloy, 41.94 grams, 48.53 mm including stand.14th-15th century AD. A cast mount in the form of a lion. The figure is modelled facing with tail raised, forelegs and hindlegs straight. The surface is textured with punched-point detailing, the musculature of the shoulders and haunches emphasised with high-relief modelling, the ears and tail similar. To the reverse are three attachment lugs. Reference: cf. the lion belt-mount from London published in Egan, G. & Pritchard, F. Dress Accessories 1150-1450, London 2002 item 1287 and the lug-mounted belt fittings on p.201. Very fine condition with a custom-made display stand. Provenance: from an important London Mayfair collection, acquired in the 1990s.
