Medieval 'Lozenges' Sword Belt Stiffener
Copper-alloy, 11.47 grams, 60.74 mm. 13th-15th century AD. A cast quadrangular mount, probably from a horse-harness or a sword belt. The surface decoration consists of chip-carved triangles in two rows forming a series of lozenges within beaded borders. At both ends are piercings to accept the attachment rivets, which are still in place. This pattern of decoration was popular on later medieval metalwork and leather. Reference: London Museum Medieval Catalogue 1940, reprinted Ipswich, 1993, pl.XLIV item 2 and pl.L item 1,2. Extremely fine condition. Provenance: found Cambridgeshire, England.
