Medieval Norman 'Horseman' Bronze Scabbard Mount
Bronze, 6.14 grams, 36.67 mm. 11th-12th century AD. A cast bronze scabbard or sheath mount depicting a helmetted horseman with teardrop shield on a caparisoned horse, with an axe over his shoulder; one of two ribbed arms to the rear of the rider. Reference: published in Hammond, B. British Artefacts Volume 3 – Late Saxon Viking & Norman, p.76, fig.1.8.5-n. Fine condition, one arm and front of horse lost in antiquity. Provenance: property of a Hampshire gentleman; acquired before 1990.
