Medieval 'Prayer Book' Manuscript Leaf
Parchment, 3.77 grams, 190 x 130 mm. Circa 15th century AD. A single leaf from a Middle Dutch prayer book, with blocks of black letter handwritten Dutch text interspersed with Latin in decorative red script. Recto: The capital is in the form of a Lombardic 'h' in red and mid-blue with foliate decoration in the voids. The versals 'G' and D are simiarly detailed, connected by a column of fine foliate decoration on the left margin. Coloured initials 'G', 'A' and 'X'. Red lettering for the incipit: 'Hier beghint die corte crius geti'. Verso: Black letter text with a single versal 'H' and two coloured initials 'H'. The text contains pious sentiments e.g. 'Glorie si den vader ende den sone ende den heilighen gheest' (Glory be to the father and to the son and to the holy ghost) and 'Here verhoer mijn ghebet' (Lord, hear my prayer). Very fine condition, slightly irregular cutting of the left margin; dry-point layout markings visible. Provenance: from an old English collection.
