Medieval 'Pugh or Stuart Family' Heraldic Horse Harness Stud
Copper-alloy, 3.80 grams, 17.72 mm. Circa 13th-15th century AD. A cast copper-alloy stud in the form of a heater shield with attachment rivet to the rear. The face of the shield is differenced with gilt billets above and below, and emblazoned with a gilt lion passant on the enamel background. The lion passant is a prominent feature of many heraldic shields including those of the families of Pugh and Stuart. Reference: Foster, J. The Dictionary of Heraldry.
