Medieval 'Ship With Furled Sail' Seal Matrix
Copper-alloy, 8.10 grams, 12.32 mm. Circa 14th-15th century AD. A seal matrix of the 'chessman' type with discoid base, round-section handle and suspension loop above. The matrix bears a design comprising a curve-prowed ship with its sail furled on the yard-arm, and a flag with dagged edge on the mast. Around this within double borders is the legend in Lombardic capitals HENRI.SCILLOSE, the name of the owner. Reference: Harvey, P.D.A. and McGuinness, A. Provenance: found Grays, Essex, England in the 1970's.
