Medieval 'St. Mark' Limoges 019886

Medieval 'St. Mark' Limoges 019886
Very Rare Medieval 'Lion of St. Mark' Limoges Plaque
Copper-alloy, gilded and enamelled, 28.79 grams, 57.32 mm. 12th-13th century AD. A T-shaped plaque pierced in four places for attachment to a large cross, reliquary or other object of veneration. The design comprises a white enamel border enclosing a pale blue enamelled panel containing the nimbate winged lion of St. Mark with most of its gilding remaining. A cross and elements of a foliate design are placed around the lion. The champlevé technique is carefully managed to produce feathering on the wings. This class of objects is associated particularly with the Abbey of Grandmont at Limoges under the patronage of Henry II (fl. AD 1133-1189). Reference: cf. Limoges plaques in Robinson, J. Masterpieces of Medieval Art, London, 2008 p.46, 96, 126. Very fine condition, a stunning piece. Provenance: from an old English collection.
