Medieval 'Stamped' Plate Buckle
Copper-alloy, 8.31 grams, 44.50 mm. Circa 15th century AD. A copper-alloy belt or harness buckle with trapezoidal loop and flat-section wire tongue, the separate plate attached to the rear bar of the loop. The plate is stamped with a series of five minims, the end ones offset slightly above and below the line respectively, imitating blackletter script (e.g. 'um' or 'imi'). On the rear edge of the plate are placed two attachment rivets. Reference: Egan, G. & Pritchard, F. Dress Accessories 1150-1450, London, 2002 items 439, 441, 465. Very fine condition, complete with rivets. Provenance: found Cambridgeshire, England.
