Large Medieval 'Toothed' Door Key
Copper-alloy, 34.61 grams, 97.20 mm. 12th-15th century AD. A substantial cast chest or door key of Type IV/V, with voided bow and retaining knop, slightly tapering shank and toothed fore-edge on the bit, a form introduced in the later 12th century AD. Reference: London Museum Medieval Catalogue 1930, reprinted Ipswich 1993, p.138ff and pl.XXIX (12). Very fine condition. Provenance: from an old English collection.
