Medieval 'Toothed Ward' Casket Key
Copper-alloy, 15.36 grams, 44.45 mm. 13th century AD. A small solid cast key of Type III with large socket to the forward edge to engage with a projecting pin within the lock. The bow is formed with a flat panel to the rear edge; it is hexagonal in plan with lateral lugs. There is a shallow collar to the shank. The ward is formed with three bits to the lower edge, slot to the chamfered forward edge. Reference: Wheeler, M. London Museum Medieval Catalogue, Ipswich, 1993 p.136-7. Fine condition. Provenance: from an old Suffolk, UK, collection; acquired in the 1980s.
