Medieval 'Transverse Ward' Door Key
Iron, 10.01 grams, 55.51 mm. 14th-15th century AD. A cast key with pipe shank and transverse ward. The bow is annular and thin, attached to the shank at the junction of the collar. The ward is attached to the underside of the shank, with the bitted edges projecting on either side. Reference: cf. key with laterally projecting bits in Pall, M. Schlüssel und Schlösser, Graz, 2012 item 7272. (p.33). Fine condition. Provenance: found Maldon, Essex, UK.
