Medieval 'Two-Part' Harness Pendant
Gilt copper-alloy, 25.77 grams, 50.30 mm. Circa 14th-15th century AD. A complex cast copper-alloy harness pendant formed in two sections. The outer frame is formed as an openwork hexafoil with palmette detailing. Hinged to the rear of the frame is a copper-alloy plate, with a large spherical knop rivetted through the centre. The plate and knop could swing independently and clash against the frame to form a jingle. Reference: Griffiths, N. Horse Harness Pendants, Finds Research Group Datasheet 5, Norwich, 1998. Very fine condition, complete. Provenance: found near Tilbury, Essex, England.
