Medieval 'Type V' Harness Pendant
Copper-alloy, 10.86 grams, 38.80 mm. 11th-14th century AD. A medieval heraldic pendant of Type V resembling a four-leafed clover. The design consists of a quadruped (probably a griffin) passant, its splayed claws and raised tail inlaid in reddish copper against the greenish copper-alloy field. The hinge components are intact, as is the round-headed stud by which it was attached to the harness. Reference: London Museum Medieval Catalogue 1940, reprinted Ipswich, 1993, p.118. Ashley, S.
