Medieval 'Zoomorphic' Openwork Chape
Copper-alloy, 14.87 grams, 42.41 mm. 11th-14th century AD. A finely detailed openwork chape for a medieval dagger. One face is decorated with a quadruped with open mouth, its curling tongue extending the length of the frame and its bushy tail brought over its back to touch the back of its head. The other face features a smaller quadruped with its feet on the upper border of the chape and its head tilted back, with a long, forked, curling tongue protruding from its open mouth. The lower ends of both faces are strengthened with hemispherical bulbs, each bearing an animal mask with D-shaped ears placed above a broad brow. The side-faces are plain and rectangular; the end of the chape is open. Reference: cf. the beasts with extended tongues on medieval buckles in Murawski, P. Benet's Artefacts of England and the United Kingdom, Ely, 2003 p.458-61. Extremely fine condition. Provenance: found Norfolk, England.
