Medieval 'Zoomorphic' Heraldic Pendant/Mount 014913
Medieval 'Zoomorphic' Heraldic Pendant/Mount
Copper-alloy, 6.11 grams, 42.15 mm. 12th-14th century AD. An unusual decorative mount, similar in outline to the heater-shaped heraldic mounts used on horse-harness and elsewhere, but with the right side truncated. The design features a quadruped, possibly a horse, on a field of pellets below a blank zone in the upper-right quadrant. The remainder of the attachment bar is sturdy and thickens twowards the upper end to develop into a hoop (now missing). Reference: London Museum Medieval Catalogue 1940, reprinted Ipswich, 1993, fig.38 and plate XVIII and cf. fig.64 13th-14th century book cover decoration. Very fine condition. Provenance: found Linton, Cambridgeshire, England.
