Mesolithic 'Bifacial' Axe
Flint, 305 grams, 135 mm long. 9,000 to 4,000 BC. A large bifacial core axe of 'Thames Pick' type with roughly triangular cross-section and convex cutting edge with pointed butt (possibly with some later reworking). In a whiteish flint with some red oxide staining. Reference: Arthur MacGregor Antiquities from Europe & the Near East in the Collection of the Lord McAlpine, page 55 for similar examples. Extremely fine and well knapped for the type. Provenance: marked in ink 'Beachy Head', East Sussex, England.
