Mesolithic 'Knapped' Axe
Flint, 370 grams, 175 mm. A large 'axe' implement formed in a grey-white flint with intrusions. This axe is well knapped to one long edge and to the tip. It appears likely that the remaining long edge might have fractured while being made but this does not detract from the functionality of the implement. Reference: Evans, J. The Ancient Stone Implements Weapons & Ornaments of Great Britain for examples of similar style. Provenance: from an old collection, with a pencilled notation possibly reading 'Asburg' (near Stuttgart, Germany). The fabric and style of working would be compatible with a German findspot. A large an interesting piece.
